Sailor Jerry Tattoos At Fun Fun Fun

For the second weekend in a row I found myself at a music festival in an airstream trailer watching bands get Sailor Jerry tattoos. At the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans we tattooed members of Fishbone, Major Lazer, Peelander Z, TV on the Radio and Boots Electric. This time at Fun Fun Fun in Austin we tattooed Big Freedia, Spank Rock, Johnny Nelson, members of Passion Pit, G-Side, Paint It Black and nearly everyone in EYEHATEGOD.

Big Freedia was a highlight, not only because she got a hilarious tattoo but because later when she was talking to Ryan Gosling she showed him it and I got a picture and it blew up all over the internet and made my client very happy and ultimately that will lead to me going on more adventures like these. My homie Johnny Nelson is on the road with Spank Rock and he got a shark right near his Driven By Boredom tattoo and Piink from Major Lazer who got inked last week came back and got a tattoo this weekend that actually says Sailor Jerry on it. It was pretty amazing.

All the tattoos were once again done by Terry Brown at Uptown in New Orleans. Next time down there you should get him to tattoo you… just don’t get him started on his love for Public Enemy or he might never stop tattooing you.

Anyway, I got a busy day today and my band has a show tonight so I am going to get out of here, but check back in a little bit because I have one more post for you and it’s a good one….

Sailor Jerry Tattoos At Voodoo

One of the cooler branding promotions that exists on Earth is Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum giving out free tattoos. Not little fake temporary tattoos with their logo on them, but actual real life tattoos given by a bearded man in a small air stream trailer. If you are not away Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins was a bad ass motherfucker who pretty much revolutionized tattooing. He was tattooing sailors in Hawaii for something like 40 years and designed thousands of flash tattoos that have been compiled into three tattoo flash books that pretty much every tattoo shop in the world owns.  Sailor Jerry died in 1973 but his legacy lives on and hundreds of people still get his work tattooed on them every week. At special music events around the country Sailor Jerry rum sets up a make shift tattoo shop in their air stream trailer and give out Sailor Jerry tattoos to any of the musicians who want one.

During Voodoo Music Experience New Orleans tattoo artist Terry Brown set up shop in the air stream for three days and did close to twenty tattoos on bands, crew members and me. He tattooed Diplo and Piink from Major Lazer, two of the members of Fishbone, Peelander Green, Jesse Hughes and Tuesday Cross from Boots Electric, my homies Star Eyes from Trouble & Bass and Roofeeo from TV on The Radio and a bunch of other people who I lost track of. Sorry.

Terry Brown is a great tattoo artist who specializes in this traditional tattoo style pioneered by Sailor Jerry. If you are in New Orleans you can set up an appointment with him at his shop Uptown. But if you happen to be a musician at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin this weekend he will be doing them there for free. I’ll be there so get at me and I can make sure you get hooked up.

Now check out all the shots of musicians getting Sailor Jerry tattoos at the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans.

Sailor Jerry At Voodoo

As you may noticed the people paying for my adventures of late have been Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum. They hired me to shoot CMJ, Voodoo Music Experience and Fun Fun Fun in Austin next weekend. I feel like they are a perfect brand for me to represent as they do rad shit for bands, throw awesome parties and are entrenched in the tattoo culture that I love to document.

At the Voodoo fest in New Orleans they had a photo boot set up and provided the rum for the festival but they also had one of their air stream trailers parked in the aritst only area and were serving up rum drinks to all the bands back stage. We had a bunch of cool bands hanging out all weekend and I got to document that stuff while they still let me check out all the bands I wanted to see. It was a pretty ideal situation.

We had Major Lazer stop by one night for tattoos and Fishbone stop by for a random 80’s dance party in the trailer. Peelander Z were there all day Friday and members of Fitz and the Tantrums and Civil Twilight spent a lot of time hanging out. Jesse Hughes from Boots Electric (and Eagles of Death Metal) stopped by and filmed a segment for Fuse and he and his girlfriend (and Boots Electric bassist) Tuesday Cross got Sailor Jerry tattoos. You might recognize Tuesday from somewhere…

Anyway this gallery is a bunch of shots of bands and other people hanging out at the air stream. Tomorrow I’ll get up all the pictures of people getting tattooed including Diplo, two members of Fishbone, Roofeeo from TV On The Radio and Peelander Green. Get excited.

But for now, click here to see the shots of the party that was the Sailor Jerry Air Stream trailer at the 2011 Voodoo Music Experience.

My New Sailor Jerry Tattoo

I am sorry I haven’t updated in a minute. I have so much fucking content to get up but I am in New Orleans at the “Voodoo Music Experience” shooting photos for Sailor Jerry. I’ll have so many photos from it up next week but I had to get something up today.

Part of Sailor Jerry’s promotional stuff here is giving the musicians at the fest free Sailor Jerry Tattoos. In the last two days they have given them to a bunch of musicians including Diplo, the green guy from Peelander Z and the lead singer of Fucking Bullshit.  Oh wait, that’s me.

Instead of going to see Blink 182 tonight Terry Brown tattooed a Sailor Jerry pirate head holding a knife on the back of my right arm. It is not my first Sailor Jerry tattoo, I have this sweet Monkey too. The pirate head is pretty fucking awesome and Terry rules. If you are ever in New Orleans or playing a huge music festival sponsored by Sailor Jerry you should get a tattoo by him. He works at Uptown in NOLA if you in the city and in need of ink.

This is my arm. I’ll be back soon!

Betty’s Birthday Bowling Bash – 10.18.11

I cannot remember the last time I went to a birthday party at a bowling alley. I am sure it was in middle school or something. But my tattoo artist Betty Rose is kinda hilarious like that and she told me if I came out and took photos she would trade me for a tattoo. As a man who loves to barter this seemed like a wonderful idea despite my hatred of bowling.  Plus Betty rolls with a lot of hot tattooed chicks and her last birthday was fucking wild.

This year things did not get quite as crazy but it was still a lot of fun. Everyone got insanely drunk and I figured someone was going to get murdered with a bowling ball but no one did so I have to say the party was a great success in that regard. By the time we all left the place was littered with Sweedish fish and spilled booze. It was clearly a party.

As an aside you may recognize Betty from my mini documentary which was viewed 30,000 times yesterday. We are going viral motherfucker.

Anyway, you can click right here to see all the pictures from Betty Rose’s birthday party at Bowlmor Lanes. And then go get tattooed by Betty and wish her a belated happy Sweet 16.

Gathering Of The Juggalos Tattoos

So last year I took so many photos of Insane Clown Posse and Psychopathic Records related tattoos. This year I didn’t really get into documenting that part of the Gathering of the Juggalos. That being said, I did shoot more than 3000 photos so a few of them had to be of tattoos.  So yeah, guess what? You get a juggalo tattoo gallery and there is some pretty wild stuff here. Also I put up a photo of Morgan Lander of Kittie with a Kittie tattoo because I find it kinda hilarious.

That being said if you really want an in depth look at juggalo tattoos, check this post from 2010.

Now, this will probably be my last post until Monday. My grandmother’s funeral is on Sunday in Lancaster, PA. I am heading down there tomorrow to meet up with my family. Not sure when I am getting back but hopefully I can get you the rest of my juggalo stuff early next week.

In the meanwhile, click here to see all the tattoos I photographed at The Gathering of the Juggalos.

Driven By Business Tattoo

If you have been following recently I have mentioned that New York Lives is doing a little video about me. After doing an interview they filmed me shooting a naked girl and taking some party photos.  But the one thing NY Lives was really interested was how I got so many people to get my logo tattooed to them.  If I am not mistaken it was 14 at last count.  So the only thing left before we could wrap the video is some footage of someone getting a Driven By Boredom tattoo.

I have had a number of people offer to get my tattoo recently, and they will all get there chance, but the one person I had in mind for the video was SB AKA Strictly Business from the band Rocky Business. I have known SB for a few years but at this years SXSW I had a chance to hang out with the band a lot and SB mentioned he would get the DBB tattoo. SB is a rad dude and I think his band is going to be huge so he seemed perfect for the video. What I didn’t realize is that this would be his first tattoo.

Normally my friend Jess does my DBB tattoos but she was totally booked and I am about to leave town for a while so I needed to find someone who could do it right away.  I reached out to my friend Betty Rose over at Red Rocket Tattoo who has tattooed me twice.  Betty is fucking awesome but it took some convincing to get her to do the tattoo for nearly free. Luckily I am a charming bastard and she loves pickles so I bought her off with a jar. And of course a plug… BETTY ROSE IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD GET HER TO TATTOO MAGIC INTO YOUR SKIN ASAP!

So yeah, SB got his first tattoo and DBB got it’s 15th.  Plus for some insane reason Betty and SB let me fill in a tiny bit of it. Plus the whole thing is on film so yeah, it was a pretty good day. The end.

And of course if you want to see more photos of Driven By Boredom tattoos click here. And if you want to get one yourself, let me know and I am sure we can work something out..

Bubble Bobble Tattoo!

So here is a really short update! I got a $100 gift certificate to NYHC Tattoo as a raffle prize during a fundraiser for Jessie Lee a while back.  It was about to expire so I decided I needed to come up with something and I decided that I should get my favorite video game character. And by favorite I mean the only game I really enjoyed growing up. The fact is I hate video games and I haven’t really played any since they added a third button. My parents got me a Wii Fit for my birthday last year because they thought I could use it to work out and I bought a hockey game and quit playing it after one period. I couldn’t figure out how to make it work.

So yeah, Bubble Bobble was my favorite game growing up and it reminds me a lot of my little brother who LOVED video games. Bubble Bobble was his game and if it wasn’t two players I probably would never have played it. I used to just hang out in the basement of my parents house watching him play video games all the time.  But Bubble Bobble was one game I played with my brother all the time and then again in college a friend had an NES so we used beat Bubble Bobble on a weekly basis. Since then I think I have only played once, when I was on tour in Atlanta with the Gaskets. This exciting and breathtaking passage is from my tour diary dated Monday March 14th 2004:

Bean and Ross went to an after party for the Jet show that was on the same night, but Teddy and I were pretty fucking exhausted so we stayed in.  Teddy went to sleep and I played Bubble Bobble with Bean’s roommate, kicking ass through level 71.  I owned that shit.

Also normally when I talk about new tattoos of mine I mention who did them and such but honestly I didn’t even get the guys name. It was sort of a new experience. It’s the first time since my first tattoo that I have just walked into a shop blindly and had the first guy available work on me.  He did a good job and it was cool to get tattooed at NYHC a shop owned by NY Hardcore legends Vinnie Stigma and Jimmy Gestapo (and now Lars from Rancid). I made a pilgrimage to the shop in 2001 as a 20 year old hardcore kid when I was visiting NYC with a friend of mine who was looking to get tattooed. Ironically she got a video game related tattoo too.  Weird.

Oh, by the way, you can actually play Bubble Bobble online for free here! And if you are wondering the green dragon is named Bub. The blue one that I didn’t get is Bob.

DBB x I Am An Evil Carrot Tattoos

Another person go a Driven By Boredom tattoo yesterday, only this time I had to get tattooed too. My old friend Doug Sakmann became the 14th person to get a DBB tattoo and I in return got his “I Am An Evil Carrot” logo.

I was introduced to Doug almost a decade ago when he was working at Troma Studios. He was the guy who introduced me to Joanna Angel and of course the whole Burning Angel crew. Doug and his company Backseat Conceptions do all sorts of projects from making horror films to editing porn to putting on super legit film festivals in Philadelphia.  They do commercial film work, throw zombie crawls and sell a “liquor filtration system“.

I Am An Evil Carrot was originally a zine Doug created over 15 years ago but has become sort of his personal brand, production company and blog.

Both tattoos were done by Jess Versus at Glamour Garage in Williamsburg. She rules, go in and get tattooed by her.

And if you want to see more Driven By Boredom tattoos click here.
