I have done a lot of event work for Inked Magazine over the last few months but I finally have the first tear sheet from them. These shots are all from the Glamour Garage party during fashion week. The photos feature Gibby from The Butthole Surfers, Mightnight Fistfight and a hula-hooping Suicide Girl named Calamity. Fantastic.
The May issue of Inked is on stands now, Brodie from the Distillers is on the cover. Click the picture below to see it full sized.
Due to all the SXSW photos I am trying to catch up on, some things are getting lost in the cracks…. Have them all here in this manageable single serving blog post:
1. WLTF #4 just came out. I have a photo in this issue. The magazine has a lot to do with sex, hence the title “Would Like To Fuck” and the shots I have had in WLTF in the past have been of sexual nature. The one I have in this issue however is not. I think you should check it out. It is a pretty great shot. That being said, even though my image is safe for work, the rest of the magazine is not. You have been warned.
2. I am sure you guys know this by now, but I managed a band called The Gaskets for five years. They broke up about a year ago and due to some weird fluke that I cannot explain their CD’s are selling on Amazon for insane amounts of money. Okay, I am sure no one is actually going to pay $188 for a Gaskets record, but it is for sale for that price. This is pretty amusing to me. If anyone wants to pay $100 for a Gaskets CD, let me know and I will sell you my copy. Save on shipping!
3. I went to a taping of the Colbert Report. I had never done any thing like that. It was a crowd of mostly tourists and all of them were really, really excited to be there. My friend Bailey got VIP passes from her boss. We are both fans, but neither of us have cable so it’s not like we are obsessed. VIP just meant we didn’t have to wait in line and we got seated first. But it is a small audience so there are really no bad seats. When you first come in you have to go through airport like security and then they cage you in this little holding pen. I cannot imagine it passes fire code as there were over 100 people in a room about the size of my kitchen. After waiting for an hour you get brought into the studio which is pretty amazing. A warm up comic comes out and then Steven comes out, people go crazy and then it is all down hill from there. The warm up comic was pretty great, I wish I could remember his name so I could link him. It is a pretty good room to work in, but still he was pretty on point. Then Steven comes out and answers questions out of character to “humanize himself” then you get to watch him put on his make up and set up everything. The first time this happens it is pretty entertaining, but during each commercial break it gets less and less interesting. The high light was watching Steven and Jon Stewart joke around before Stewart does the Colbert lead in at the bottom of his show. It is during the last commercial of the Daily Show and they were pretty hysterical. That stuff is not in character and is pretty great. Then the show starts. The main problem with it is that you want to be watching the monitors the whole time because they have the graphics, which completely defeats being at the taping so you keep trying to watch him live and then you get distracted by the cameras and the graphics you are missing. Then you break for 5 minutes before the next segment. The whole thing is just really distracting so it is hard to get into the show. Still, it was a fun experience to do once, and the interview with Biz Stone from Twitter was pretty interesting. I Twittered about it while it was happening. Anyway, watch the show below, you can sort of see me when the camera pans the crowd at the beginning. Get excited.
Things are completely nuts. I am shooting 1000 photos a day, 17 hours a day. I have been on my feet from noon to five every day. Total fucking madness. I haven’t taken a shower yet, I am sleeping on a gross couch and I haven’t made out with anyone in days, but I have taken a lot of rad photos, met a ton of people and my arms are covered in wrist bands. My cell phone keeps dying, my Twitter keeps fucking up and my text messages keep disappearing. I am shooting stuff for Brooklyn Vegan, Flavorwire, The Village Voice, Inked Magazine and as of today the Vice blog. The first published stuff is up today on Flavorwire… Check that shit out. I have seen the Circle Jerks, Ninjasonik twice, Lucero, Semi Precious Weapons, Juliette Lewis, Daniel Johnston, Hearts Revolution about probably 50 other bands. It has been nuts. It is going to take forever to get these photos up.
Anyway, I just wanted to give a shout out to AirWalk who gave me these free shoes. I pretty much only wear high tops so I was pretty psyched I could get some high tops. I used to wear AirWalk back in the day. Have you guys ever read Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. There is pretty much a whole chapter about the rise and fall of the brand. But they are bringing shit back, doing the branding, getting the name out. They are bringing back some retro styles. They got some low top boots that they did for the Beastie Boys. Pretty sick shit. Anyway, check out the kicks I got. Hopefully I can score some free pants tomorrow.
So I have officially stopped giving away free shirts online. The demand was actually probably way too high. I may have to spend some money to print up some more stuff. Info on that coming soon.
In the mean time I have something to show you. I have started shooting some Dos And Don’ts for Vice. All of the stuff I am giving them is unpublished, most of which has been taken with my 35mm point and shoot that I carry around with me everywhere. (Speaking of which, does anyone want to trade a Yashica T4 for my T4 Supra? I’m not that happy with it. I miss my old T4.) Which means you don’t need to fear if I am shooting an event for this site. But, be warned, if I come at you with my point and shoot you may be mocked for days to come by lonely people on the internet. Of course clearly most of my friends will be Dos like my boys Richie and Mello below. These are the first two I shot that went up. I’ll let you know if anything really great goes up. Also, I am not writing them, so don’t yell at me for that. Enjoy.
A few weeks ago I was asked to shoot the Miskha Spring 2009 Lookbook. I met all the models and Mishka kids at their office and while we waited around for everyone to get read I just started shooting people on this wall for fun. I didn’t use lights or anything, other than an off camera flash, but the shots turned out pretty funny. Then we went out to dinner and shot a bunch of stuff at Kellogg’s Diner. Then we finally headed out to Studio B and shot some stuff there. The idea being just a night out with friends… who all just happened to be wearing clothes with amazing eyeballs all over them. I took some shots I really liked in the cab on the way to the diner, but they didn’t use them. I will probably end up posting some of the out takes on here sooner or later. It was a super fun night. Check out the lookbook here, and check out Mishka’s website for the new line, online exclusives and their rad blog.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the lookbook.
Just a quick update with some non party, non nude work I did….
I shot all the photos for the website for this photo contest. There is a poster too, but I haven’t seen it yet. I will get an image of that when I have one. I photographed all my cameras for fun a while back. I blogged about it here. These Swiss guys found the photo on Flickr and liked it and wanted me to redo it. I did, and then they paid for my rent for two months. I love them.
Anyway, the photo old from Flickr is below and the website with the new shots is here. The last of Sundance goes up in about ten minutes and god willing my gallery software is going to stop fucking with me and we will have photos from the Vice party on Wednesday, Webster Hall on Friday and 2 hours at the Comic Con on Sunday. I will put them all up tomorrow if they have been uploaded by then. See you soon.
Here is some unlikely press. I had a photo published in The Library Journal. For those of you not familiar with the shots I took of the Donnell Library Center before it closed its doors, take a look. It is probably the most read post on this site after it got mentioned on Boing Boing. It is nice to have something published that is in no way offensive to anyone. I can show my mom something without her giving me a “mildly proud, yet equally disappointed” look. Anyway, I just thought you guys might like to see it. It’s something different for my press kit.
So finally I have found a day to relax. I have been watching old Aquateen Hunger Force episodes, catching up on 30 Rock and The Office and watching the season premiere of Lost. Later my friend is going to come over and we are going to watch a movie. And I slept for 8 hours. I did wake up from a dream very upset that I wasn’t going to play in the Super Bowl, but I guess that’s just how it goes. I am going to Philly tomorrow for no reason at all, and I will be back in NYC, ready to start working on this site again on Monday. I have so many photos to get up, it is going to be nuts. I am shooting a photo booth at Cain next week and hosting Trash Friday. And possibly shooting a look book over the weekend. I can’t wait to see you kids again. Let’s fuck shit up.
I have had a bunch of my Sundance photos show up on the internets, mostly the photos I did for Flavorpill, but a bunch of stuff none the less. I figured I would link it here and continue relaxing instead of doing an actual update. So enjoy, and a nice photo of a still sexy 72 year old Robert Redford talking to Andie McDowell who I have had a crush on since I saw Groundhog Day for my 13th birthday party.
This place is nuts. So much more fun than last year. I am completely stressed out but getting some good shots. I am working primarily for an Absinthe called Le Tourment Vert. They are the main spirit sponsor to the festival so we get a lot of access to cool things. Last night I was at a party at Tao with Sting, Paris Hilton and Russel Simmons. That was pretty nuts. I have shot a bunch of celebs; the three aforementioned, Amy Poehler, Kim Porter, Wesley Snipes, Guillermo del Toro, Jeff Dowd (aka The Dude), Monique, Kelli Garner, Jason Ritter, Brett Rattner, Aaron Paul and a few others…
Many of these images are being serviced to media and things so I can’t post galleries yet, but here are a few photos that appeared on the Flavor Pill blog. Flavorwire also posted some of my photos from opening night party, but I didn’t run my batch Photo Shop filter through them so they are all upsettingly dark.
So yeah, here are a few celeb shots to hold you over until I get to the rest of the photos in later updates.
