Leesa Squyres

I photographed Lez Zeppelin’s drummer Leesa Harrington-Squyres for the Village Voice last week. It’s in print this week’s issue as illustration for an interview with her. When not touring with the infamous all girl Lez Zeppelin tribute band she works as a bouncer so the Vocie asked her about how (not) to smuggle drugs into a NYC nightclub… It’s an entertaining article and you should read it.

We shot these photos in about 7 minutes outside of Slattery’s Midtown Pub where I was throwing my weekly Dolfans NYC events. The Dolphins lost for their final time this season and the light was getting low so we had to shoot these real quick. Oh, I also hadn’t slept in 30 hours so that was fun too. No idea why I am telling you any of this, but I need to write something whenever I do a post right?

Leesa is super interesting and I dig this mini-gallery so I figured I would post it for you guys. I needed to get something up after the holidays. It’s been a minute since I posted anything and all I have ready to go is a bunch more nudity so I figured I would give you guys a break from all that. I know how much you hate naked photos…

Okay, I have filled enough space. Click here to see all the portraits of Lez Zeppelin drummer Leesa Harrington-Squyres!

The Mixed Media Method – 10.29.15

Last night I shot a new party for my friend Andrea Grant. She is a talented writer, total babe and gives me work a couple times a year so I am a big fan of her existence. She helped start an art, music and poetry collective called The Mixed Media Method and last night they threw their first event at Le Poisson Rouge.

Andrea got things started off with a poetry reading and then Canadian singer/songwriter Apryll Aileen played some songs that were real pretty and then this kinda great Russian band called Mad Meg played. I can’t really explain them but I was real into it. Kinda reminded me of some weird mix between Nick Cave and Gogol Bordello which maybe doesn’t make sense at all. Alycia Mayhew was the headliner and it was a CD release party for her new album “Letting Go”. I unfortunately had to go throw an event for a football team that got fucking embarrassed on national TV so I missed her performance but I showed up a bit early and took some shots of her sound checking and she sounded great.

On top of all the live music Ian Slarsky did blind contour portraits of people all night and DJ Ivan played music between bands. Between Ian and Ivan and Igor (me) there was a lot of name related confusion but we all did our jobs anyway. Rebecca Larson hosted the whole thing too so that’s important and stuff.

And thus ends another weird event write up. I think it’s time you go look at pictures.

Another Evening With Lucero – 10.8.15

Before I head out for a very long day of photographing the New York Comic Con I wanted to get up some more photos of Lucero. Last week I shot them in Nashville as part of the kick off for their Sailor Jerry Presents: An Evening With Lucero tour. Well last night the tour came to NYC so I figured I would shoot that show as well.

Once again they opened for themselves with an acoustic set and then playing a second, longer, electric set. It was a big crowd that filled up most of the massive Webster Hall. I don’t have much to say different from the last show, except that I ran into a bunch of friends including Oliver Peck who is on tour with Lucero for a few days before he comes back to NYC for the live Ink Master season finale on Tuesday.

Anyway, it was a fun show and I think it was even better than the Nashville show because Webster’s sound is fantastic and I had actually slept.  Now go look at some photos and I am gonna go photograph some nerds.

An Evening With Lucero – 10.1.15

Last night Lucero played the first date of their US tour, kicking things off with a two set show in Nashville. Fortunately Sailor Jerry is sponsoring the tour so I got a chance to fly down to Tennessee for the event dubbed “Sailor Jerry Presents: An Evening With Lucero”.

The idea was that Lucero would play two sets, one acoustic and then come back 30 minutes later and play a second electric set dubbed “the drunk set” by front man Ben Nichols. It’s a pretty cool idea especially if you are obsessed with a band like a ton of Lucero fans are. It was a packed house and I met people who came from NYC, Baltimore, San Diego and even Ireland for the show. Kinda amazing dedication.

In my life time of music I can only think of a few times when I have seen a band open for themselves. I saw They Might Be Giants get dressed up for Halloween and pretend to be a TMBG cover band only to play a legitimate set an hour later. They spent a lot of the set making fun of the “cover band” for drinking all the booze on their bus. I saw Camper Van Beethoven open for Cracker and while technically they are two different bands they just swapped out guitar players. And once when I was managing the band the Gaskets I hired a cover band to play their entire first album at the release party for their second album. Not quite the same thing but their die hard fans loved it. They got to hear the old hits and the whole new record.

Not that any of that is relevant to last night, but my flight back to NYC is delayed so you get that random story because I have nothing else to do.

If you are a Lucero fan this is a tour you should not miss. They are playing at Webster Hall next Thursday and I will be covering that show as well so I hope to see a bunch of friends there there. Check out the rest of their tour dates here.

Books, Babes & Some Really Weird Music

Hey it’s Monday and after I spent 3 days at the NY Art Book Fair and yesterday dealing with the pain that is my Miami Dolphins fandom it’s time to start fresh with a new week. It’s possible I ate two entire pizzas last night and today it’s time to catch up on a bunch of work and perhaps force myself to eat a salad.

With that in mind, let’s drop a bunch of stuff on you real quick.  Got some new naked photos, some weird music and of course I gotta try and sell you some zines again. Let’s start with the zines…

I spent Thursday night and most of Friday and Saturday at the New York Art Book Fair. As both a creator and consumer of photo books the NY Art Book Fair is pretty much my favorite thing ever. I get to look at so much rad shit, buy a bunch of rare books and zines and hopefully make more money than I spend. It’s also a good networking opportunity. Last year I met Mike Krim who runs Paper Work NYC and this year he let me sell my stuff at his booth. Last year I met fucked up illustrators Matt Crabe and Wizard Skull and this year I am just finishing a zine collaboration with them and a bunch of other artists many of whom I ran into at the book fair. Oh, did I mention that there are so many real cute girls there who also make really cool shit? What could be better than that?

The zine fair went pretty awesome and I actually stayed real close to my budget a picked up some stuff that I am really happy with. I also think I sold a bunch of stuff, I don’t have the exact totals but I think I made more than I spent so high five. But I do know I have some copies of my new zine Same Old City left still so they are now for sale in my Etsy store and will ship pretty much right away. I just mailed off all the pre orders. So get you copy now!

Next up, let’s talk babes. A really long time ago I shot my friend Caitlin. She had done some modeling for her roommates art projects but I was the first person to photograph her professionally. We took a bunch of photos and even though she’s kinda awkward it was a good kinda awkward and I think we got some really pretty photos. I posted a few to my Tumblr and stuff and then totally forgot about the set. Last week I found the set and realized I had never posted it. It had been a while so I hit her up about the photos and she didn’t really want them on my website which is totally fair. I love shooting new models, but there’s always a risk that they are gonna change their mind about the photos and I always respect that even though it can be really disappointing. Luckily we came to a compromise. I told her I wouldn’t post any more of the nude ones on my site, but she said I could publish them to Girls of Driven By Boredom. That way the images aren’t just floating about the internet for free and you gotta at least spend some money to see them. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

The last thing in this way too long post is a weird one. I got a bunch of my Miami Dolphins vinyl collection online. The Dolphins may have been embarrassed yesterday but I will never be embarrassed by my collection of some of the weirdest records to ever be released. I have what I assume is the world’s largest collection of Miami Dolphins themed vinyl and my plan is to eventually build a website with all of my collection on it but for now I started a Sound Cloud with just the singles. If you are a fan of football, record collecting or just absurd 70s and 80s nostalgia you need to check this out.

Fool’s Gold Day Off – 9.7.15

Yesterday I headed to the NYC edition of Fool’s Gold Day Off. I think it’s the third one I have photographed in the last four years. Always a good time and yesterday was no exception. I took 700 photos which I managed to edit down to about 100 which makes for a pretty serious gallery. I got a bunch of stuff to do today before I sit for 5 hours of a chest tattoo so I am gonna make this quick but here’s a real brief rundown.

I got there pretty late so I missed a bunch of stuff but I caught A-Traks set which involved special guests ASAP Ferg, ILoveMakonnen and Fabolous. I caught Post Malone & Skepta before personal favorites of mine Flatbush Zombies came out and fucked shit up. The night ended with Meek Mill who I don’t really have a strong opinion of but I can’t stand Drake as a human so I am pro-Meek Mill just for that. He played a pretty solid set though.

Now click here for all the photos from the 2015 NYC Fool’s Gold Day Off.

More Music @ The 2015 Gathering Of The Juggalos

The truth is I didn’t shoot a lot of music at the Gathering of the Juggalos. I tried to hit the headliners and stuff but I decided not to spend too much time doing it and I also decided I wasn’t going to shoot the Psychopathic Records bands aside from Twistid and ICP. This was my 6th Gathering and I think I have far too many photos of bands that no one outside of juggalos has ever heard of. So to my juggalo fans, sorry.

I also only took a handful of photos of Twistid and didn’t shoot ICP at all because I got stuck backstage. Seriously the security wouldn’t let me get back out to the crowd so I could go to the front of the stage. It was totally insane. Eventually I went around the back way but by the time I got near the stage the photographers were being kicked out of the pit. I did take some wide shots though.

As far as non Psychopathic bands I shot Hopsin and Tech N9ne on the first night and also got to shoot DJ Paul of Three Six Mafia fame again. His set was really late at night so I was planning on skipping it but I got in a long conversation with a hot lady and a pro wrestler and by the time I was about to leave he was going on. I have shot him before and bought hot sauce from him before but I am never upset about hearing Three Six songs.

Flosstradamus DJ’d which was cool since I have photographed those guys a half dozen times in my nightlife career. I actually didn’t get to the stage in time to shoot them from the pit but I shot them from the side of the stage and got a couple snaps at the end. J2k got hit in the face with a rock so I got a nice shot of him with a bloody towel. It ended up on his Instagram actually.

Let’s see… what else? I took a few photos of Puddle of Mudd which I was ready to make fun of but then they played War Pigs by Sabbath and I changed my mind about them. Hard not to make fun of Mushroomhead who up close look to be wearing cheap halloween masks and the best part of their set was their water drums which they might have stolen from the Blue Man Group. I actually don’t even remember what their music sounds like because it was so silly.

Oh and Twista was awesome but he kept shouting out Ohio to the crowd as if everyone who came to the show was from Thornville, OH. Still, that dude is real impressive.

Okay, it’s 11pm and I got shit to do so let’s wrap this up. See you tomorrow with three more updates.

Waka Flocka Flame & Machine Gun Kelly @ GOTJ

I decided it would be a good idea to combine both Waka Flocka Flame and Machine Gun Kelly’s Gathering of the Juggalos galleries into one post. They played back to back before ICP on Saturday but they also played a song together to open MGK’s set so it just makes sense.

Let’s start with Waka Flocka because he put on one of the greatest sets I have ever seen. When he first came out on stage most of the juggalos gave him a huge cheer, but some of the juggalos started throwing stuff at him. First it was the standard Faygo bottles but I started to see rocks and glass and even fireworks thrown on the stage. Waka Flocka looked pissed as he performed and I couldn’t tell if he was about to walk off stage.

Instead as one bottle came particularly close to his face he just jumped in the crowd. I thought he was about to fight someone but instead he performed the next few songs of his set while in the mosh pit. I saw a juggalo pass him a bottle of vodka and he just chugged it. Juggalos were taking selfies with him mid song and he was actually posing for them while rapping. The whole thing was honestly fucking amazing and probably the best set I have seen in 6 years of photographing the Gathering and maybe one of the top five sets I have seen in 20 years of shooting live music. He must have agreed cause he commented on my Instagram photo of him with “best show ever”.

Click here to see the story I did for Noisey on his Gathering set. – Click here to see a slightly blurry photo of him on a golf cart that I shot for Rolling Stone. –

After his set Machine Gun Kelly went on. As I mentioned before I have seen him at the AVN Awards and photographed him backstage at the Woodie Awards but this was the first time I had seen his full set and he put on a great show. I don’t love his music but it was fun to watch and the juggalos loved it. He came out with Waka Flocka on a golf cart and they performed a song together and then he did his own thing. Good show.

More photos coming later tonight. In the mean time check out full galleries from both artists.

Stitches @ The Gathering Of The Juggalos

Gonna get all Gathering of the Juggalos music posts out of the way in one day and we are gonna start with the controversial rapper and Instagram sensation Stitches.

I am gonna shove most of the bands at the Gathering into one big post later today but Stitches gets his own post and it’s not because I am a Stitches fan or he put on a really photographic show, but just because I had this feeling that something horrible could happen at any minute. I was just waiting for some chaos.

The chaos never came but he did throw fake cocaine on everyone and he gave a juggalo $500 for no reason. He also is obviously an intense looking job. I saw him walking around earlier in the day and didn’t get a portrait which was stupid but maybe one day I will run into him again if he isn’t dead or in jail before then.

Click here to look at more photos of Stitches at the Gathering of the Juggalos.
