Twitter Roundup

So things have been a bit slow around here with me being a little sick and trying to get caught up with all my back logged photo updates. Well, I am caught up and less sick and ready to rock, but I wanted to let you know that even when things are slow on DBB, I am always updating my Twittter with all sorts of things from videos, links, hilarity and wacky antics. In case you missed it over the last week, I am going to repost some of the links I sent out into the interwebs. If you like any of this stuff, you should probably be following me on Twitter. If you are on Twitter, you shout Retweet this post (and every post) using the Retweet button in the upper left corner of this post. Then everyone will get the wondrous joy that is this post.

  • I got a 19 out of 20 on this Helvetica quiz. I guess it pays to have nothing but graphic designer friends. If by payment you mean having way to much information on overused type faces stuck in your head for no reason.
  • I never liked butterfly tattoos or tramp stamps until I saw this butterfly tramp stamp. Now I need one of my own! Who wants to get matching ones with me? NSFW.
  • And lastly the video of the week… Watch this crazy guy rant about helicopters at a city council meeting. If he was there every week, I would become a councilman. Fucking brilliant.

Significant Objects: Porcelain Scooter

Significant Objects is a project where writers and artists try to attach significance to a thrift store object there by creating something of greater value.  After the object as are written about they are placed on eBay at their original price and then their added value is determined by how high the price goes over the minimum bid.  As of Wednesday, 35 objects valued at under $50 have been sold for over $1000.

Significant Objects teamed up with the design blog Design Observer last week.  Several of Design Observers bloggers signified about some significant objects this week.  My friend and musician Teddy Blanks is a pretty regular contributer to Design Observer and he was asked to do something for the project. Teddy decided to write a song called “Figurines” about a small Porcelain Scooter that he was assigned.  The scooter cost $1 at a thrift store and is currently selling for $2.38.  That is a 138% increase! But don’t worry, you still have time to bid!

Check out the song below, and read the lyrics by clicking here.

Carpe PM

Two of my friends and NY night life icons DJ Jess and DJ Bastard have started a new remixing posse called Carpe PM. Now despite the silly name, and sillier eye make up in their press photo these guys know how to make the kids dance. They have been doing NC-17 together at Lit for seemingly ever and they run two of the more successful parties in NYC right now individually. Jess does Trash at Webster every Friday and Bastard does Disco Down every Tuesday at Happy Endings. It is no coincidence that those are pretty much the only parties in NYC I don’t get paid to shoot (they are notoriously cheap…). Anyway, they just released a remix of the Passion Pit song Little Secrets. You can download or stream it below and if you dig it, which of course you will, you can vote for it here. I think if they win they get a free pony plus stable fees for 2 years! I could be wrong though… Still, vote for them anyway, every remix duo needs to own a pony at some point in their careers.

Teddy Blanks Does Moz

My friends at the Music Slut are slowly releasing a Morrissey tribute album for his 50th birthday, Every day until his birthday they are releasing a MP3 of one their favorite bands covering a Moz or Smiths’ song. My friend Teddy decided to cover the Smiths song called Girlfriend In A Coma. Personally I sort of hate Morrissey, but I love Teddy Blanks and I love the Music Slut kids so check out the track below. It is pretty fun. And check out the Sluts write up here.

Oh yeah, FYI, Teddy also designed the album cover.

April Fools

So a lot of people sent me emails, texts, Twitters, Facebook and Myspace messages concerned about how my website got hacked for April Fools day.  Well… I “hacked” it myself.  If you missed checking out DBB yesterday, after the page started loading, the site was immediately redirected to THIS IMAGE.  I wanted to make my site look exactly like one of those Myspace spam pages.  It looked pretty great I think… probably too good since everyone thought it was real.  I got an email from someone who is working on trying to get some good advertising on the site and he and his boss looked at my site  yesterday only to find that someone had hacked it.  Oops.  If you guys had just clicked the porn spam you would have been directed back to the site, but alas… not everyone figured that out.

I was pretty into it, but it was pretty spur of the moment.  I had some other ideas for April Fools jokes but they didn’t really work out.  I think my joke last year was the best so far.  I had a TON of people think I was actually stabbed… Some people even blogged about it.  I even went as far as wearing a bandage over my stomach the first few days I went out after the 1st last year… Although the most time I spent on an April Fools joke was when in 2002 if you tried to go to my site you ended up on this one instead.  I spent quite a bit of time crafting that beauty, so I hope you will take another look.

Lastly, we are taking a break from SXSW coverage to bring  you party photos from Tuesday and Wednesday and I will be getting to those in about 10 hours when I wake up.  In the mean time, enjoy the embarrassing media coverage of one of my favorite April Foolers…. Improv Everywhere.  You would have thought that at least their fans would have been in on the joke… Jesus people are gullible.

Do Or Don’t

So I have officially stopped giving away free shirts online.  The demand was actually probably way too high.  I may have to spend some money to print up some more stuff.  Info on that coming soon.

In the mean time I have something to show you.  I have started shooting some Dos And Don’ts for Vice.  All of the stuff I am giving them is unpublished, most of which has been taken with my 35mm point and shoot that I carry around with me everywhere.  (Speaking of which, does anyone want to trade a Yashica T4 for my T4 Supra?  I’m not that happy with it.  I miss my old T4.)  Which means you don’t need to fear if I am shooting an event for this site.  But, be warned, if I come at you with my point and shoot you may be mocked for days to come by lonely people on the internet.  Of course clearly most of my friends will be Dos like my boys Richie and Mello below.  These are the first two I shot that went up.  I’ll let you know if anything really great goes up.  Also, I am not writing them, so don’t yell at me for that.  Enjoy.

5 Links

I am busy at work on editing photos, working on a possible show or at least portfolio site, and getting ready for my SXSW trip. I am also trying to find work for Winter Music if anyone need a photog. (I might have time to shoot a party or two at SXSW as well, hit me up.) So long story short is that I am just going to throw some links at you. These are things I wanted to blog about, but haven’t really thought they justified a full post. So… here are 5 links, that I dig:

1. My friend Leah Taylor did some investigative journalism at Virgin Records the other day for the Flavorwire blog. She and a friend decided to check out all the cheap deals in store for us all. Her findings made me lough out loud twice. Seriously, I am sitting alone in the dark laughing at my computer screen. That does not happen often. If nothing else she gets you hip to the 10% sale on Christmas Gremlins. Only $24 after discount!

2. Street Boners & TV Carnage. I haven’t seen TV Carnage in years but when I saw some traffic coming to my site from a link posted in the comments section for a Street Boner post I rediscovered TV Carnage. TV Carnage were these DVD’s that just had hours of TV edited into hi-larious montages of bad television. But now they have all sorts of clips and you can still buy the old DVDs I think, rereleased and what not. My favorite was a montage of like 20 cops being asked to turn in their gun and their badge. Classic, yo.

3. What could possibly be better than LOL Cats? Rol Cats. I am not sure if these are found Russian LOL Cats then incorrectly translated into english, or if the whole thing is made up from the get go, but either way they are brilliant. I asked a Russian friend to translate the actual text and she just started laughing and asked me how I find such weird shit. I guess it is like the secrets of a Tootsie Roll Pop, the world will never know.

4. My brother came over to watch Lost last week and we had a conversation about TV we had been watching. I was convincing him to start the Wire and he demanded I watch the live action Tick show. I loved the cartoon, but when the live action Tick was on in like 2001, I tried watching one episode and gave up. I am pretty sure everyone else did too because their are only 9 episodes. That being said, we were all wrong, this show is fucking brilliant and it is now online for free.

5. The Huffington Post comedy section is pretty on point usually. I have been checking it ever since in the post election world they abandoned their original content site 23/6. I was a big 23/6 fan, but they still have some original stuff, and the stuff the aggregate is usually pretty top notch. But my favorite post of late has been their list of the 9 Weirdest PSA’s. I am going to post my favorite for you down below. After you watch it, read the article. And remember, EVERYBODY IS ON COCAINE!! EVERYONE!!

Creative Grooming

Sinead sent me a link to Creative Grooming a very long time ago, and I knew I had to blog about it but I just kept putting it off.  I realized that a) Probably a million people have blogged about this allready and b) There is nothing I could possibly say to express the feelings I have about this.  That being said, I am going to try.  This woman not just styles her poodles in horrifying ways, but there is an entire magazine devoted to covering horrible shit like this.  Her abominations have actually made the cover twice.  She wins actual awards for dressing her dogs fur up to look like… well not dogs.  I mean you would think that just painting a Greatful Dead bear on a dog would be stoneable offense.  I think there is something about that in the bible.  And she is just not happy with her dogs looking like the back of a VW Bus, decided that her dog should look like a snail, a shark and a fucking chicken.  Who the hell would want to see a dog that looks like a chicken?!  (Admittedly everyone, but it is still fucked up.)  PETA needs to stop trying to take away my delicious force fed duck liver and get their asses in gear on this.  If Banksy spray painting some cows pissed them off, this should have them crying in their sleep.  Speaking of sleeping, the only way I have been able to sleep at night since witnessing this is to pretend this is all an elaborate hoax and these dogs have been photoshopped, because I am just not comfortable living in a world where dogs are walking around disguised as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  God have mercy on us all.

Mishka Spring 2009 Lookbook

A few weeks ago I was asked to shoot the Miskha Spring 2009 Lookbook.  I met all the models and Mishka kids at their office and while we waited around for everyone to get read I just started shooting people on this wall for fun.  I didn’t use lights or anything, other than an off camera flash, but the shots turned out pretty funny.  Then we went out to dinner and shot a bunch of stuff at Kellogg’s Diner.  Then we finally headed out to Studio B and shot some stuff there.  The idea being just a night out with friends… who all  just happened to be wearing clothes with amazing eyeballs all over them. I took some shots I really liked in the cab on the way to the diner, but they didn’t use them.  I will probably end up posting some of the out takes on here sooner or later.  It was a super fun night.  Check out the  lookbook here, and check out Mishka’s website for the new line, online exclusives and their rad blog.

Here are some of my favorite shots from the lookbook.
