Most of you are probably too young to remember the days when you had to watch actual slide shows of vacation photos. I remember my grandparents went on a safari in Kenya in the 80’s and I had to sit there and watch all these slides projected on the wall for what seemed like hours. I thought the elephants and giraffes were cool but when you are 7 years old it gets really tedious really quickly. Vacation photos are almost always boring but fortunately for you guys I don’t do vacations like most people.

I rarely go on vacation because my whole life is sort of a vacation but once a year, every year, three of my closest friends and I go on a fishing trip in the small town of Lewes, DE. This year was a little bit different because sadly my friend Jamie’s grandmother died and it was just three of us. We also had the fishing boat we were going to go on get canceled twice which means we had to go fishing on a pier instead of on a boat but it was fun and relaxing and I have some pretty weird friends. My friend Barry is a 6’6″ tall in shape black dude with questionable taste in style and my friend Sam is a short nerdy Jewish guy. I have known them both since I was 10 but the three of us look really weird rolling into Dairy Queen together.

After the fishing trip I spent a day in DC with my parents before heading out to LA for my girlfriend’s birthday. She wanted to go to the desert to celebrate so we spent a day in LA, four days in the desert and then I hung out for another few days in LA. When we got back to LA from the desert I did a little bit of work and photographed two naked porn chicks but mostly it was just hanging out in bed with my girlfriend and eating lots and lots of food.

It seems like your normal vacation except that my girlfriend is a porn star and we went to the Salton Sea so shit got weird. You saw the photos we took in abandoned homes in Bombay Beach but you didn’t see the photos we took on the beach or in Niland, CA. Niland is this dying city at the far northeast end of the Salton Sea. It is an amazing place on it’s own but on the outskirts of Niland there is a place called Slab City. Slab City is a free RV park that has people living there year round. It’s sort of like a giant hobo camp in the summer full of crazy people, meth addicts, hippies and outlaws. The sign on the way in claims in spray paint that it’s “The Last Free City”. There is a shoe tree and a venue/bar made out of a bunch of trailers stuck together that has live music on the weekends. I really want to spend some time there at some point in my life. It’s incredible.

Slab City is in the shadow of one of the weirdest and most amazing tourist attractions in the country. “Salvation Mountain” is an art project started by a man name Leonard Knight. He built a mountain out of sand and trash and has been painting it for decades with religious messages.  Despite my disinterest in religion I have wanted to see this thing for years and meet Mr. Knight. Unfortunately he was put into a home for dementia late last year. From what I know about him he was a very kind man and never preachy and created an amazing work of art. A twenty something guy with a beard was working on it when we got there and was very nice as well. I asked him if I could take his picture and he said “This is Slab City. You can do whatever you want.” Amazing.

So yeah, this is not your normal vacation slideshow. We did some touristy stuff like visiting Shield’s Date Garden and Pioneertown but a lot of the photos are just of her naked all over the place so you cannot complain about that. We ran into Vincent Gallo at Dana DeArmond’s place and he gave us tons of tips on the Salton Sea, we hung out with a really cute puppy and there are outtakes from two shoots with naked porn babes. So yeah, you get some pretty shots of clouds and landscapes and touristy things, but you also get naked girls, dead fish and adorable puppies. It’s a pretty fun gallery and it’s all shot on 35mm. You even get some black and white stuff.

My vacation continues on and I will be back in full swing after Labor Day but I wanted to bring you another update to hold you over until I get back. I did post a B-Side the other day about the odd coincidence that famous republicans like to star in movies with apes, but that doesn’t count as a full update.

The other day I posted a bunch of my 35mm black and white nudes, today I have for you some 35mm black and white portraits. Like I mentioned in my last post, over the last few years I have been keeping a roll of black and white film in my old Pentax and bringing it on shoots with me and such like that. I was going through a bunch of my black and white stuff and after I put all the naked girls together I put together a gallery of portraits. I don’t love all these shots but there are a lot of pictures that I think you guys will really enjoy. If nothing else these last two updates are a nice break from all the color digital party pictures and fun things you expect from Driven By Boredom. So here is a vacation from the norm while I am on my vacation.

So enjoy these mostly unpublished shots. Some of them have been on my Tumblr (which I am still updating daily even on vacation) but a lot of them have never been seen before. and I will be back on Tuesdays with some insane photos you will not want to miss.

I am right in the middle of my vacation. I went to the beach over the weekend with two of my best friends from elementary school and now I am in LA visiting my girlfriend. Today is her birthday and we are going to some sort of spa or something in the middle of the desert for a couple of days. Fortunately I got a few updates ready to go before I left so I should have two or three updates for you between now and when I finally get back to NYC next week.

I always preferred color to black and white in photography. I shot black and white film in high school and college but as soon as they let me in a color dark room I switched to color. I generally feel like black and white is just an easy way out… if you can’t shoot color you can just make it black and white and maybe no one will notice. That being said I do feel black and white has a place and is just another tool like digital or Polaroid or iPhones or whatever you want to make pictures with.

A few years ago I wanted to sort of get back to my roots and really take the time to compose and manual focus and just force myself to slow down before taking a photo. I dug out the old Vietnam era Pentax that was my mothers that I shot on when I was first learning my craft. I started taking it to shoots with me and just keeping a black and white roll of film it it at all times. I shot a bunch of stuff with it, but a lot of what I was shooting were nudes of girls in bed.

I started shooting all these nudes with a 50mm lens because the 50mm 1.4 was the fastest lens I have for my old Pentax and since you can’t push your ISO much past 800 when shooting 400 speed film at 1.4 was my best chance of being able to shoot in a dark bedroom without strobes. You can ignore that last sentence if you don’t know anything about photography but long story short when you shoot at 1.4 it causes a severe lack of depth of field which makes for really soft photos where most of the photo is blurry except for the main point of focus. It’s a nice effect if done right and people seem to like “artistic” nudes shot like that.

Anyway, the point of this is that I have learned to love shooting black and white again. It’s really nice to see the grain in the film because black and white digital looks like shit to me. Black and white film looks better to me than it has ever in a world where digital is so pervasive. I think you will dig on these photos and after these nudes go up I have a second series of black and white portraits that I hope you will enjoy as well despite the lack of nudity.

Last Friday I had my first solo NYC photo show at Mishka’s flagship store 350 Broadway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I showed a bunch of 35mm New York street photography under the name “These New York Streets”.  The opening party was a lot of fun and packed all night, partly because of my amazing work, but probably mostly because there was 10 bottles of Sailor Jerry rum and 10 cases of PBR. I have learned that free booze is the only way you can get people to look at art which is why MOMA always has big lines for their “Keg Stand Thursdays” events.

I showed 11 20″x30″ photos at the event and you can see them all by clicking right here. The first 11 photos were in the show, the next two were outtakes that I printed but didn’t show and the rest of the images are street photos that didn’t make the cut. If you are interested in buying any of the (first 13) photos they are available in an open edition at 20″x30″ for $250 and a limited edition (#’d out of 10) at 11″x14″ for $100. There is also a super limited print done with artist Lamour Supreme that is only $25.  All of this stuff is available by contacting me or going over to 350 Broadway and picking it up there. The exhibit is up for the next six weeks if you want to check it out for yourself.

Normally I am the media but with this event I got reported on so I figured I would share a couple links for you. The New York Observer wrote a nice article on the show (although there were some errors in it), Mishka posted a bunch of pictures from the show on their blog (although oddly none of me) and the Village Voice ran a slide show of my street photography pictures.

I also should thank everyone for coming out, thanks to Mishka for letting me put some photos on their walls and thanks to Sailor Jerry and PBR for providing a lot of free booze. Also thanks to Lamour Supreme for painting on one of my photos. Art Basel was an amazing time. I mean I always have a great time in Miami but this trip was pretty great. I spent six nights on a couch with a bunch of girls who party like maniacs and stay up all hours of the night so I got maybe 8 hours of sleep total the whole trip. I went to a lot of crazy parties, saw some amazing art and got my jock on catching my two favorite teams the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Capitals on back to back days. I even got some nudity out of the whole thing which I know will make you degenerate bastards happy. So yeah there is some NSFW stuff in here.

I took a ton of 35mm shots with my point and shoot camera that I carry with me everywhere. It all started out on the flight down I met a guy named Warren who runs Branded Arts introduced me to a bunch of rad street artists pretty much right when we got off the plane. From there I hit up Liv where I saw my hometown hero Wale and friend of many friends Santigold perform. From there on out it was just work party and eat ending with a relaxing Sunday and Monday catching the Dolphins demolition of the Raiders and then watching my Caps get beaten by the damned Florida Panthers.

You just gotta look at these photos but I wanted to give a few shout outs to some good people I spent time with this trip. This is about to send like the last track on a rap album. I gotta thank everyone I crashed with and their insane dog named Kitty. I made a new friend in Sasha Anter who slept on a couch next to me every night. Lots of good hangs with my homie Lamour Supreme who introduced me to Buff Monster who is real good people. Thanks to Shark Toof again for painting my vest. Shout out to Sailor Jerry and Filter Mag for paying for my trip. Thanks to Kimora Klein for getting naked in the middle of the street in the middle of the night. Good times with Warren and his boy Roger all week. Always good to see my boy Brock Fetch who was in town for Juxtaopoz. I got to chill with him and his editor Evan who evidently was a fan of my site which was awesome. Good peoples there. Good to see Ninjasonik in yet ANOTHER city. Thanks to Jake Jefferson for getting me into some fun stuff. Shout out to Rony Alwin and his lady for being amazing kids. I keep taking 35mm snap shots of everyone I eat with. If you recall I posted this massive gallery of photos of people eating a while back and today I add another 32 exciting shots to the gallery. Over the last few months I have been traveling a lot so I have dinner pictures in such exotic locations as Miami, New Orleans, Austin and Chicago! Lots of good food, interesting people and cute girls.

My favorite spot was Lambert’s in Austin with the Black Lips and Skerrit Bwoy. I had hot dogs on halloween with Girl Talk and his posse and late night dinner with zombie babes. There may or may not be some shots of cute girls I went on romantic and life changing dates with and there is a shot of a man named Shark Toof devouring a sandwich like a human shark hybrid. There is even a photo of dinner with actual juggalos. I know you missed them. All and all it is a delicious good time and a perfect post for a lazy Sunday evening.

For years I have been carrying a little 35mm point and shoot camera with me everywhere and documenting my life. The cameras have changed and I have broken more than I want to remember but the one thing that has stayed pretty consistant is that I am constantly taking photos of my friends eating.  In my head I have been working on a zine of food photography and one of the things I wanted was a big spread of just hundreds of pictures of my friends eating.  The other day I put all those pictures into one folder and decided I should put them on Driven By Boredom.  It seemed like a good idea.

So in this gallery you are going to get over 100 photos of me eating with different people. There are some common themes. There is a lot of photos of photographers and models because I know I can always write that stuff off.  There are a bunch of dates.  There are a lot of photos at Kellogg’s Diner because I have lived a few blocks away from it for more than 5 years.  There are a couple pictures of cute girls at Popeye’s because even though taking a date to fast food is a horrible idea it is still my favorite place to eat. There are a few photos of me too… and a handful of famous porn stars.

Anyway, I feel like this is a fun gallery and I will probably keep updating it in the future. I took a new shot just yesterday.  Good times.

Welcome to my final post of 35mm photos from my month long trip away from NYC. After my two week trip to LA I had plans to fly back to NYC on the 29th of June but things did not go as planned. My friend Whitney decided she was going to drive to NYC from LA. She posted on Twitter that she was looking for a friend to come with her on the trip. Despite being little more than acquaintances with Whitney at the time I told her I was in. On June 30th we left LA for NYC.

Our first night we spent in Scottsdale, AZ.  I had a friend we were going to meet up with but she flaked on us so we broke into a pool party at the W Hotel instead.  The next day we just drove as far as we could and ended up crashing for a few hours in a Super 8 in Ft. Stockton in West Texas. From there we traveled to Austin and spent a few days there.  On the night of July 3rd we partied all night long and woke up with the realization that we should just move on to New Orleans instead of staying for the 4th in Austin. We went swimming in Barton Springs and then got a move on to the Big Easy.

We got to New Orleans in the middle of the night and crashed imediately.  The next day we had some epic gumbo and checked out some touristy VooDoo stores. Whitney stripped with my friend Chelsea at a club on Bourbon St. While I got some work done, went swimming and then wondered aimlessly around the French Quarter. They didn’t get out of work until nearly 5am so we just hung out at Chelsea’s place for a bit and then went back to the hotel for a 3 hour nap.

We made it all the way from New Orleans to Charlotte, NC in one day. When we got to Charlotte, NC it was after 2am and all the bars were closed. Luckily my Charlotte friends were up for some weirdness. The second we got there they handed Whitney two PBRs and handed me a shot gun.  My friend Christine came over and I took photos of her and Whitney topless with the guns and then we hung out on a boat in a driveway. It was pretty white trash in a really good way. Whitney and my friend Joe went back to his place to crash and Christine and I stayed up till dawn so we could take photos as the sun came up.

The next day we headed north to Richmond, VA where I lived for 5 years previous to moving to NYC. We had dinner with one of my best friends and then continued on to DC.  That’s where Whitney and I made our separate ways. She dropped me off at my parents house and she headed on to NYC. I hung out in DC for three days and hung out with my parents new puppy and a few of my DC friends… but mostly I just caught up on sleep before finally heading back to NYC.

I think this write up was pretty fucking boring, but I think the photos will show you that we had a pretty good time.  I think some of the best shots came from the weird places we stopped on the road. I think you will dig em. These pictures are NSFW and that doesn’t include the 56 other topless photos of Whitney that are over here.

Continuing the trilogy of 35mm pictures from my month away from NYC today I bring you the 35mm snap shots I took while spending 16 days in LA.  My LA trip consisted of trying to relax, hanging out with old friends and of course shooting a lot of naked girls. This gallery is pretty representative of all that with a little bit of partying thrown in for good measure.

Let’s start with the part you probably care about most… The naked girls. I forget the total exactly but I shot more than a dozen girls while I was in LA including at least two full sets I haven’t even looked at yet and one I thought I already posted until just right now. So that means in this gallery you are going to get previews of the shoots I did with Miss Crash, Ashley Blue and Orian from Gods Girls. You are also going to get to see behind the scenes stuff and just shots of us hanging out. Some of these shots are just sort of fun snap shots, and some are photos I really love.  For example I didn’t love the set I shot digitally of Ashely Blue, but I love the 35mm stuff we did.  This shot of her holding Dave Naz’s revolver might be my favorite shot of my whole trip.

Now aside from girls you get to see a lot of the shots that I shoot every day that no one sees. For example I religiously take photos of everyone I eat with. It’s not exactly art or anything, but I have hundreds of these photos and I am going to do a zine of them one day. Plus how many people have seen a photo of Maddox where he’s not wearing a crown or an eye patch? Also there are a bunch of just pretty pictures of LA including this shot of the billboard my friend Robyn shot. There are several shots of cops since I saw 10 people get arrested in 4 incidents while I was in LA.

And then of course there are the parties.  I only shot one party for my website while I was in LA but I went to a bunch more. I did the regular LA club stuff of course but I also spent several nights hanging out in hotel rooms the Mondrian, at the Roosevelt for their weekly Night Swim and I had an extremely awkward morning spent at an after after party with hot tubbing Tunisians. Oh yeah, and I spent my last night partying with some New Yorkers…
