2016 NYC Zombie Crawl – 10.15.16

Another day another zombie crawl. I have been covering Doug Sakmann’s NYC and Brooklyn zombie crawls twice a year for nearly a decade and this year was no exception. I keep thinking all this is going to make for a good book that I can sell to nerds one day but I feel like by the time I ever do anything about it no one will care about zombies anymore… At least they keep making episodes of The Walking Dead…

This year the crawl started out at The Continental. I got there a bit late and they were already gone. I started walking towards Otto’s Shrunken Head (the first stop) and I ran into them about 6 blocks north of where they started. After a quick stop at Otto’s they crawled to Beauty Bar for the after party.

The after party featured music by J & The 9s and Skeletal Life, “undead burlesque” from Liberty Rose and some sideshow madness from Dr. Claw. Also a bunch of clowns showed up and some people from Troma including Will Keenan who played Tromeo in Tromeo and Juliet which if you haven’t seen it is maybe Troma’s best film and it was written (and maybe directed) by James Gunn who wrote Scooby Doo 2 (and also some other stuff Guardians of the Galaxy for example).

So go look at these photos if you feel like you need more zombie crawl photos in your life. These pics are kinda NSFW cause of the burlesque, the painful to look at sideshow stuff and one topless photo at the very end.

2015 NYC Zombie Crawl – 10.18.15

The god damn NYC Zombie Crawl is back. My friend Doug Sakmann keeps throwing these things and for some insane reason I keep showing up. This is the 9th year he has been running the zombie crawls and he does two a year and I think I have photographed something like 15 of the 18. I really hate getting fake blood on me because it is sticky and smells like pancakes but it always makes for good pictures especially around Halloween.

This year it was probably the coldest I remember a zombie crawl being (take that global warming! (wait, is that how that works?)) and everyone met up at the Twins Pub in midtown. I was just a few blocks away watching football with my Dolfans NYC crew so it was easy enough to roll over there.

The zombies made their way from Twins to the Museum of Sex which apparently has a bar in the basement. I mostly spent my time there looking at sexy photo books in the gift shop because I care about photo books more than I do about zombies or booze.

From  there the zombies crawled over to Slake for the after party and two of my friends bands (Jungle Junkies & Bikini Carwash) played but I decided I couldn’t stay there any longer since I was on about two hours of sleep and felt like I was losing my mind a little bit. I did get to see the trailer for Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse which seems like it could be a pretty good edition the growing line of zombie comedies like Shaun Of The Dead and Zombieland.

In conclusion (how every essay I wrote in middle school ended), there are some photos of zombies that you should look at it if you like that sort of thing. Thank you for your time. The end.

2014 NYC Zombie Crawl – 10.11.14

Once again I photographed another zombie crawl. I keep telling myself that I am going to stop taking photos of zombies, yet I keep going to these things. I mean how many photos of zombies can you possibly take? But they again they are always fun to look at…

NYC Zombie Crawl does two crawls a year, on in Brooklyn during the summer and one in Manhattan around Halloween. This year the Manhattan version happened around the NY Comic Con. It was a bit rainy and Comic Con stuff was still going on so when I got to Twins Pub the crawl seemed under attended but as the zombies walked up 8th avenue new zombies kept joining the hoard.

The zombies headed to Times Scare for some zombie burlesque from the Peek-A-Boo Review but right outside the bar NYC Zombie Crawl leader Doug Sakmann got detained by police after he climbed a sign post directly above a police check point. Fortunately he only got a ticket and the crawl was just mildly delayed.

After the burlesque a ton of zombies had joined up and they headed through Times Square and over to Bowlmor Lanes for the after party. A bunch of bands played and Disgraceland Hook Squad & Family Sideshow did horrible things that you might not want to look at if you are squeamish. The sound sucked at the venue which was a bummer because I was pretty excited for Murder One and Girls Girls Girls who are Motorhead and Motley Crue tribute bands. I am a pretty huge Motorhead fan and Motley Crue was probably my favorite band when I was 11. Luckily I have seen Motorhead a half dozen times and I think I am shooting Motley Crue’s last NYC show later this month.

Danse De Sade, Gash and The Deafening played as well. Danse De Sade were super creepy and featured a half naked lady which I appreciate. She got my card and we talked about taking photos at some point and I wouldn’t hate that. Gash were pretty punk rock which I enjoy and their front lady was badass. The Deafening also feature a badass front woman, Lena Hall, who won a Tony Award for her roll in Hedwig & The Angry Inch on Broadway. She was awesome and sang on the bar, made out with audience members and poured beer all over everything which is pretty much exactly what I do when I front a band except that she can sign her ass off as well.

That’s enough rambling. Go look at the massive gallery of photos. There are about 300 of them and they are reasonably NSFW.

NYC Zombie Crawl – 10.16.11

I feel like I have shot 100 New York City zombie crawlsJust do a search, it’s amazing how much zombie stuff I have shot for my friend Doug Sakmann who runs these crazy things.  I always end up with great photos and meet crazy girls with questionable morals so it seems to work out. This year was no different.

This year the crawl started out at Beauty Bar, made it’s way south through the Halloween Adventure costume shop and then over to The Continental for cheap shots. After that the craw continued south to the after party at Arlene’s Grocery where Angelo Moore AKA Dr. Madd Vibe from Fishbone performed his solo set for the first time. He also joined the crawl shooting a music video along the way. Also performing was Nassau Chainsaw who always put on an insane and very dangerous show. After that there was a performance by God’s Green Earth but I had been awake for way too long at that point and I left with two zombie babes to go eat some human food for the first time all day. Brains are just not that filling.

At nearly every NYC zombie crawl the Disgraceland Hook Squad performs. They are a suspension group and they hang themselves by hooks which I always love photographing. They always perform with Nassau Chainsaw and this year was no exception. One of the first people I met at one of these zombie crawls was a Disgraceland member named Spliff. He was a great guy and I was really upset when I heard he was in a horrible car crash that paralyzed him last year. Sadly Spliff died on Sunday and everyone found out during the zombie crawl.  So many people there knew him and it really changed the mood of the whole thing. Everyone still had a lot of fun but everyone who knew had their minds on Spliff. I know I did. This post is dedicated to him and I am asking you guys to donate a little something to help his family bury him. He will be missed.

Now to lighten the mood a bit before we get to the pictures I should probably mention that there are a bunch of giant zombie boobs in this gallery and on top of the blood and gore normally associated with zombies and flesh pulls this gallery is very NSFW.

So assuming you are not offended by fake blood, real hooks and zombie boobs please click here to see the HUGE gallery of photos from the 2011 NYC Zombie Crawl.

Ps. If anyone knows Jennifer Davis… I found her ID.

2017 Brooklyn Zombie Crawl – 7.2.17

Meant to get these Brooklyn Zombie Crawl pics up a few days ago but let’s just say I was a little bit preoccupied shipping out hundreds of books this week before I head to LA tomorrow for the LA Instaxxx book release. Let’s just say it’s been a crazy fucking few weeks. I have been working non-stop on Instaxxx so the zombie crawl was a nice break on Sunday.

The crawl started at the Charleston in Williamsburg where we were greeted by zombie Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD and Ben Kissel from the horror podcast Last Podcast On The Left. Kissel is running for Brooklyn Borough President was the “grand marshall” of the zombie crawl. I don’t know enough about him to endorse him but he’s for criminal justice reform and a quick look at his Twitter has progressive Tweets about immigration and LGBQT issues so I am on board with all that. Plus Borough Presidents don’t really have a lot of power so voting for him probably couldn’t hurt… although anyone who has been endorsed by Gary Johnson worries me a little bit.

We left the Charleston around 6:30 and walked to McCarren Park. For some reason there were a bunch of Guardian Angels with us which was kinda cool given that I don’t think I have seen one in the entire time I have lived in NYC. Glad they are still around. We stopped at the park quickly for a group photo and then headed to Greenpoint to stop for drinks at A-Bar. I haven’t been there since the opening, but I ran into a few friends there who had no idea the undead were coming.

From A-Bar we hit Brooklyn Bazaar for the after party where we were met by come competitive eaters in town for the 4th of July including my friend Tim “Gravy” Brown and Michelle Lesco who came in second in the women’s Coney Island Hot Dog Eating contest. Competitive eating legend Badlands Booker was there too but he was there for the entire zombie crawl.

I didn’t take a ton of photos at the after party because my band actually played it but I got some shots of the other bands including Jess O’Lantern, J and The 9’s, and Uncle Jake and the 18 Wheel Gang. Plus my friend Lunchbox did some horrifying sideshow shit and “Everything is Terrible!” headlined with their insane video projections and super weird performance. I wish I could explain the whole thing but I was back stage getting ready for our show. All I know is that they are building a pyramid of Jerry Maguire VHS tapes and I wanna fucking see that shit.

Anyway, my band closed out the night and I ate a raw potato on stage for the two dozen people who suck around after Everything Is Terrible. I have no idea how the potato got on stage but let me tell you, don’t eat a raw potato like an apple because it tastes terrible and it makes it quite difficult to sing.

I gotta pack for LA now. I will post again when I have all the details of the LA Instaxxx book release party worked out but it’s July 14th if you happen to be around. Go look at zombie photos now.

2014 Brooklyn Zombie Crawl – 5.25.14

The NYC Zombie Crawl returned to Brooklyn on Sunday. Held every Memorial Day weekend for the better part of a decade I feel like I have photographed this madness dozens of times… but maybe that’s because there is also the Manhattan version of the crawl in October, plus special events like movie premieres, zombie beauty pageants and even zombie raves. I have photographed so many NYC Zombie events that I want to do a book of this stuff quickly to cash in on the zombie craze before people finally get sick of zombies. I mean the Walking Dead has to end eventually right?

Anyway, the crawl started out at Trash Bar in Williamsburg, headed to McCarren Park to harass kickball playersa, then over to Bar Matchless for the insane after party. This year the zombies got stopped by the cops and for some reason they were totally reasonable. After pulling several hundred zombies over, they just redirected them up Bedford Ave instead of Driggs. Despite the fact that zombies were jumping on cars and stopping busses all the cops asked was that we walk with the flow of traffic. They then shut down all of Bedford as we walked to the park. It was sort of amazing considering the zombie crawl had no permits or any sort of permission to be doing this madness.

So I gotta get ready to leave town again tomorrow so I am gonna just leave you with these pictures, but I will be back before I bounce with some wild photos from the after party. So come back ASAP.
