A Few Of My Favorite Things: Charlton Heston SciFi Movies
A Few Of My Favorite Things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.
So Charlton Heston died yesterday. This is tragic. I know most of you probably think of him as this crazy right wing gun nut, but I love him. He is honestly one of my favorite actors. Yes, he was amazing in his historic and bible epics, and yes he played a convincing Mexican in the second best Orson Wells movie, but I love him for his SciFi. I am not normally a science fiction fan. I own about 1000 movies on DVD, but my science fiction section has only about a dozen movies… of those five have Charlton Heston movies… and three more of them are Planet Of The Apes 3-5 which while do not have Heston in them, could not exist with him. So today, in honor of the man I am going to break down my three favorite SciFi movies starring Mr. Heston, which coincidentally also happen to be my three favorite Heston movies in general. Keep reading after the break.
1. Planet Of The Apes – 1968
My number #1 favorite SciFi movie all time. One of my favorite movies of all time and the first film to one of the best film franchises of all time. For me it is either POTA or Nightmare On Elm St. The Freddy movies were pretty fantastic except Freddy 6 which is one of the worst movies of all time. The same goes for POTA 5: Battle For The Planet Of The Apes. All of the movies make perfect sense and could create a prefect circle in time and 5 could end right where 1 begins, but it doesn’t and ruins everything. If I could redo one movie in history it would be Battle. Anyway, Heston was only in the first film and Beneath. The first is amazing. You guys all know the plot by now, and if you don’t just rent the movie. Heston is a bad ass and the film is mind blowing. Get on it. Oh… and if you didn’t know, he was wrong, it was Earth all along. I guess the finally made a monkey out of him.

2. Soylent Green – 1973
So it’s the future! And everyone is starving in NYC because all fruit and veggies are extinct for some reason. There is a new type of food, which is little colored crackers with all the nutrition you could need in a few bites. The best kind is Soylent Green. People do whatever they can for this food, but no one knows what is in it. When the head of the Soylent company is murdered Heston, a detective, has to find out what the fuck is up, and find out what Soylent Green is made of. Here is a small hint. Heston kicks all sorts of futuristic ass in this one as well and the greatest mystery of human worlds is solved!

3. The Omega Man – 1971
This movie was based off the book I Am Legend like the Will Smith movie, but instead of gay ass Vampires it is crazy future post apocalyptic mutants hell bent on destroying the one surviving man. Fortunately that one remaining man is Charlton Motherfucking Heston and he is out to fuck up mutants. They are afraid of the light and he uses that to his advantage. He also meets a bad ass surviving black woman with nothing to prove. She’s got an afro and a gun and legs up to here. They fall in love and kick some ass and all is good in the world… or is it!? You will have to watch the movie to find out! Heston is so bad ass. I miss him already.
