Robot Rock – 1.4.08 (The Wire Jump Off)
Robot Rock was the after party for the launch of season 5 of the Wire. This just happens to be one of my favorite shows. I spent a lot of my youth in Baltimore (Bal’more, B-More) so the Wire makes me miss Charm City a lot. A ton of the cast and crew showed up to the party. A good time was had by all. Here are a couple interactions I had with cast members at the event.
1. I had a long conversation with Delaney Williams who plays the Sgt of the Murder Police. Evidently he managed a bank for 10 years a few miles from where I grew up. He seemed like a very cool guy and seemed pretty into the name “drivenbyboredom”.
2. Anwan Glover who plays Slim Charles on the show got accosted by a VERY drunk fan after the show. The fan forced Anwan to talk to his friend on his cell phone and made him take countless photos with him. The whole time Anwan is trying to escape in a cab, but the cabs just aren’t showing up. It was horrible to watch. It makes you thank god you aren’t famous.
3. I asked Dominic West who plays Jimmy McNulty (who is pretty much the star of the first three seasons) if I could take a picture of him. He told me “No. I am high on crack.” I thought he was joking until he repeated “Seriously, I am fucking high.” I am sure he was still probably joking, but at the very least he was drunk as hell and was sort of dancing like a maniac. I wish I had pictures of that.
Also, last night was the soundtrack to season 5 release party and there was a rap performance thing on stage. The guys kept shouting things like “if you are hood living throw your hands in the air” which did not go over terribly well in a all white West Village crowd. Eventually Mullyman sang his single “The Life, The Hood, The Streetz” and jumped in the crowd. It finally got people going. Also featured on stage: Verb, D.O.G. and Dirty Hartz. They kept it very Baltimore.
