I took nothing but band photos for 8 years for a reason. I just forgot what it was. Andrew W.K. reminded me. I just forgot what it was like to be in a crowd of people going fucking off the wall crazy. I forgot what it was like having to climb over someone to get a shot. I forgot what punk rock photography was all about. Energy. Make no mistake about it, Andrew W.K. is punk fucking rock. I am not a huge fan of his music, and I wouldn’t really classify his music as punk rock music, but that dude is punk as fuck. All the band stuff I have shot recently is from the crowd or from the side of the stage for some indie rock band. People dancing or taping their feet while I move around trying to get the shot. Even when I shot the Faint or Courtney Love there were mosh pit type things, but it was so sanctioned, with them on stage and us in the crowd. Andrew W.K. invited the crowd on stage; we became the show. I had to jump over people to get shots; it was so much fun and I took much better pictures than I have in the last few years. I am really proud of a few of these. I need to go back to Richmond and catch a Municipal Waste show as soon as possible. I miss thrashing so, so much. Click to see the pictures.

I sort of rushed this set as I had other things on my mind at the moment. She is a beautiful girl so there are some hot shots anyway. It was pretty funny to see the reactions of people who were walking down the street when they saw a topless girl with a mohawk standing outside. One guy asked her for a cigarette. She was like “Where the hell would I put cigarettes”. He wasn’t paying attention and didn’t even notice she was naked. Check my photos of her photos out here, or see her completely naked here. Most weeks I go see Eugene Mirman and Bobby Tisdale’s comedy show on Wednesdays at Rififi. It is pretty amazing. Eugene showed this video a few weeks ago, but he released it online today. It is pretty amazing as well.

What is Driven By Boredom?

Driven By Boredom is my motto. The basic idea is that whenever I get really bored in life I have to come up with something to do. Usually that manifests in some sort of creative out put. The idea being that I need to use boredom as a motivating factor in my life. Not everyone has the luxury of having nothing to do. Luckily, I did very little work in college and had plenty of time to make this dumb website. Now I force myself to have time for this page, even when I am not so bored.

What is Drivenbyboredom.com?

Drivenbyboredom.com is a website that I started my sophomore year in college as a way to house a number of projects that I was working on online. I wanted to be able to point my friends to things I was doing and have my own personal URL. I wanted my own email account and I wanted to be able to upload the photos I was taking. I had recently made a very successful photo blog, but I was sick of it and wanted to start something else. At the time blogging was not what it is today, and blog sites like mine were part of a genre of websites called E/N sites or everything/nothing. E/N sites mostly consisted of a blog that was constantly linking to other sites, videos and pictures. What set DBB apart from many of the other E/N sites is that DBB was 100% original content.

Currently Drivenbyboredom.com is mostly a party photo blog although I hope it is a bit different from some of the other party bloggers. I try to post a lot of different things on this site, but I shoot so many parties that this site has become a party blog. That is not what DBB started out as 7 years ago, and it probably wont be a party blog 7 years from now. This site changes as I do. Just keep checking back…

Who are you?

My name is Nate Smith, but everyone has called me Igor since 1995. Want to know why I am called Igor? Watch this. I was born in 1980. I have a BFA in photography and film from Virginia Commonwealth University. I also attended Penn State University for two years before I transfered to VCU. I manage a band called the Gaskets. I do freelance photography and I do make a good amount of my income from it, but I also work part time at a hotel bringing people food that I cannot afford. It is humbling and miserable, but it allows me a very flexible schedule and the ability to spend over 30 hours a week on this site.

Why can’t I download photos from your galleries?

You can. It’s just the program I use is unfortunately confusing. Click here to figure out how to do it.

What does NSFW stand for?

NSFW stands for Not Safe For Work. In the case of my web site it means their is probably a nipple or two somewhere in the galleries. Most work computers have my site banned anyway, but just in case, you might want to keep away from the NSFW galleries on your office computer.

The grand re-opening of Robot Rock.  This party used to take place at Movida and was a great time.  Now it takes place at the Highline Ballroom and is still a great time.  They have glowing walls which make for amazing photos (see below).  Andrew WK blew people away (see photos tomorrow.  And I met the girl that I think I have thought was the hottest girl in NYC forever.  I never had the balls to talk to her until she talked to me.  Hmm… crazy.  Anyway, fun times.  Check the Andrew WK photos tomorrow; I am really happy with them.  And check these photos… NOW.

Two male porn stars showed up.  This made the hot body contest very interesting.  I wasn’t there too long so I don’t really have much to say about the night.  Just look at the NSFW pictures.  Also, this girl below is amazing looking; I think I am in love.

Flaming Bag Head is the greatest sport on Earth. I am not sure why it is not in the Olympics. The concept of the game is that two people set paper bags on fire and wear them as helmets. The idea is to use your bag to set your opponent’s bag on fire. The first person to remove their bag loses. This is my friends Judge and Maria playing at William And Mary University in probably 2002 or 2003. Round 2 will be up on Monday and it features me and one of my best friends Tom in a much more exciting battle. I bet you can’t wait until Monday to see who wins.

By the way, if you have noticed this is the third youtube video I have posted in the last week. This is because I figured out how to put my logo on iMovie. I am going to be posting tons more videos over the coming weeks. Get pumped.

The last of the three briefs for PHTHRD. VOTE? Eh.

This is the one I was least happy about. The thing is I took these photos of people doing drugs and it made a big scene and everyone was watching and all excited. And then I found out they wouldn’t let me use any of those photos because of the Dewar’s sponsor. So they used some other photo I didn’t even pick out. They told me they would change it, but I felt it was probably too late. Whatever… you get to see the photos and that’s the important thing.

That being said, I had a lot of fun at this contest and I am glad I did it despite some problems I had. I think I was probably pretty annoying to the LVHRD guys and I feel bad about that. They are great and I hope I can do stuff with them in the future. At the very least shoot their events. I think I am becoming a LVHRD member. So, despite my last place finish in all three categories, I am still pretty happy with the results. And I will photo-battle any of you motherfuckers any time or any place. Bring it on.
